A profession for a pandemic

Environmental Health professionals have never been so important to the world. After all, this is someone who instigates prevention programs and strategies for the control of communicable diseases and major outbreaks like coronavirus.

At ECU you can start a career in Environmental Health – or add to existing qualifications – through two study options:

  • Diploma in Environmental Health - 1 year full-time
  • Bachelor of Health Science, majoring in Occupational & Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) - 3 years full-time

Both courses can be studied online, and completing the Diploma gives you up to one year's credit towards the degree course.

The new OEHS major also has provisional professional accreditation with Environmental Health Australia.

Student stories

  • It was a great hands-on opportunity to learn what a Speech Pathologist does

Speech Pathology is a blend of science and working with people and that was embedded throughout the course. We had practical units from first year where we would go out and observe Speech Pathologists and see how they worked and the environments they worked in. It was a great hands-on opportunity to learn what a Speech Pathologist does, so I was better prepared when I graduated.

  • I wanted to work with the best

I decided to study at ECU for two reasons. Firstly, I wanted to move to a new country as I felt the only way to learn more was to get out of my comfort zone. And secondly, I moved here because of my supervisors. They are leading researchers in the exercise oncology field and I wanted to work with the best.

A highlight for me so far has been presenting at the Asia-Pacific Prostate Cancer Conference during the first year of my PhD.

In the future, I hope to stay within the university circles and share my wealth of information with young students to build a strong foundation for their careers.

  • I chose ECU because the course came highly recommended, and was recognised across Australia

The course exposes you to really diverse learning environments, including an ambulance, a hospital simulation centre and even the WA Police Academy that's right next door.
