Get ready, ECU City students – your new study hub is almost here. The Learning Commons, Kaarlak, is set to be the ultimate all-in-one space where study meets connection, support, and collaboration.

Spanning two central levels, Kaarlak is designed around how you actually study:

  • Level 4: collaborative, social, and tech-rich – perfect for group work, E-Lab access, and student support.
  • Level 5: quiet, focused, and reflective – home to the physical library collection and spaces to study solo.

Associate University Librarian Nicole Johnston says students shaped the design from day one. “We’ve listened to what students want, and that’s shaped everything – from the furniture to the tech to the support services we’ll have on hand.”

And it’s not just about books and Wi-Fi. From a sensory room and outdoor study spots to inclusive tech and on-the-spot help from Library Peer Assistants, Kaarlak will give you everything you need to succeed.
